Visiting Maui means connecting with stunning natural beauty, from vibrant coral reefs to lush rainforests. But protecting our island’s ecosystems means making mindful choices that help keep our environment pristine and plastic-free. At Pilikahakai Foundation, we’re committed to empowering residents and visitors alike to reduce plastic use. Together, we can reduce pollution, protect marine life, and honor the spirit of aloha for future generations.

Why Go Plastic-Free?
Plastic waste poses a serious threat to Maui’s fragile environment. Single-use plastics end up on beaches, in the ocean, and in natural habitats, harming wildlife and contaminating our lands and waters. By making simple swaps, we can all help reduce this impact.

How to Be Plastic-Free on Maui

Here are some easy ways to make your visit plastic-free:

  • Bring a Reusable Water Bottle: Say goodbye to single-use plastic bottles. Instead, bring a reusable water bottle to fill up at stations around the island.

  • Opt for Reusable Bags: Many Maui stores no longer offer plastic bags, so remember to bring your own tote bag when shopping for groceries or souvenirs.

  • Dine with Reusable Utensils: Pack a set of reusable utensils and a metal straw to avoid plastic cutlery and straws, especially when eating takeout or exploring local food trucks.

  • Say “No” to Single-Use Plastics: Politely decline plastic lids, stirrers, and other single-use plastics. Maui businesses are increasingly offering sustainable alternatives, so take advantage of these whenever possible.

  • Support Local, Eco-Friendly Businesses: Many businesses on Maui are committed to reducing their environmental impact. Support shops, restaurants, and hotels that prioritize sustainable, plastic-free practices.
